a special birthday shout out

I was inspired this morning to shout out someone since their birthday is this week, someone who shares in my love of both Hanson and Joshua Jackson and doesn’t tolerate bitchassness. That being said, the following is for you Erykah

in search of the j.lo glow

So I have a slight obsession with makeup.

You wouldn’t automatically know this upon meeting me since in actuality I rarely have the time or exert the effort required to actually do it on a regular basis, but I do try and at least carry a just in case kit with multipurpose items for those surprise outings. But my love for all things makeup is not the purpose of this entry.

You see while I have very mixed feelings on Jennifer Lopez, I have always admitted to one truth, the girl’s face is SO beat. Now please don’t interpret that as a negative, recently I’ve picked up that lingo from b.scott in which he describes a makeup artist beating his face into gorgeous submission. I for one have always been in search of achieving the iconic image of Jennifer on the cover of her second album:

Now this woman has made a killing off this “glow” she’s attained from Scott Barnes, the makeup artist who is responsible for her fabulous face. She’s even got a perfume based on it. I love everything about this look, the contouring, the highlighted cheekbones, the very subtle smokeyness of the eyes and the nude-ish lip. It’s a look I have always been trying to achieve because it’s so classic and chic.

Now I look nothing like J. Lo, while my skin is olive based I’m definitely on the lighter end of the spectrum as opposed to the nice caramel color she’s got going on. My face is round with freckles, I have dark hair and thicker brows, and I certainly do not posses that high cheekbone structure. This is not to say I have some beauty complex because I don’t look like her, I am perfectly happy with my looks, I’m just pointing out that our features are quite different.

However that healthy glow is something anyone could be able to achieve and while what works for me does not necessarily equate to what works for everyone, I’m going to share what has been successful for me thus far.

You’re using my tax dollars to do what?

Senator Charles Schumer of NY has written a letter to Steve Jobs concerning the new iPhone’s malfunctions.

As a voting resident of New York I have a serious problem with this. Below is a letter I just sent to the Senator because no matter how big of a tech geek I may be, I – unlike my elected official – have my priorities straight.

Senator Schumer,

As a voting constituent in New York I am well aware of the many issues facing our state from the budget crisis, to unemployment, to education funding. As my elected official I would expect that you represent and advocate for the pressing needs of our state and aide in continued progress for us and our country. In times of economic crisis, massive environmental issues due to the oil spill, immigration becoming more and more of a priority, I would imagine someone in your seat would have plenty to do. This is precisely why I am baffled by the fact that you have taking time to address a cellphone. Last I checked, the percentage of Apple iPhone users in New York that purchased the latest technology is quite minute in comparison to our overall population. While I see so much of my paycheck disappear into federal and state taxes I at least try and take comfort in the fact they are funding programs and efforts into making my state and country a better place. It is incredible disappointing and enraging to see that a representative of mine who benefits from my hard earned money is using his time and energy to address something so superfluous as a hardware flaw on an overpriced phone.

I expect more from you Senator.

If you agree with me I welcome you to contact Senator Schumer and let him know he should be making better use of his time considering he’s working on our dime.

2010 May Day Rally in NYC

Photos and video from the day’s events. It is the biggest rally I have seen in New York since the Iraq war protests in 2003. The feelings of unity and hope filled me as I saw people representing from all over the globe unified for immigrant and workers rights. I think it was put best by a commenter on facebook when they said:

“Your Christ is a Jew. Your writing is Latin. Your numbers are Arabic. Your democracy is Greek. Your sound system is Japanese. Your ball is from Korea. Your DVD is from Hong Kong. Your shirt is from Thailand. Your soccer stars are from Brazil. Your watch is from Sweden. Your pizza is Italian. Your hamburger is German…. Tacos are Mexican. And you are the one who looks at that migrant worker as a despicable foreigner?”

excerpts from a young nuyorican geek

So I’m in the midst of a massive spring cleaning effort in order to redesign my apartment. It’s been a long process since I don’t have much time to dedicate to the cause, but purchase by purchase, weekend by weekend, it’s slowly coming along.

I have a love of interior design and will probably make a post regarding that, however this is not at all the purpose of today’s post. In my mass removal of junk I came across what has to be one of my first journals – the mini blogger in the making. I didn’t write in it often – a habit I clearly still have – so it spans over a few years. Below are some excerpts from entries that I found rather amusing.

HTC Droid Incredible Comes to Verizon April 29

Another Android phone is coming to Verizon. The HTC Droid Incredible will officially land in stores on April 29, with preorders starting Monday. The phone is retailing for $200 with a two-year contract. Phandroid leaked details of the Droid Incredible earlier this week, but now the release has been confirmed. HTC’s latest device will run Android 2.1 with HTC’s Sense user interface. And unlike Verizon’s similarly-named phones (the Motorola Droid and the HTC Droid Eris), the Droid Incredible has a slim design that makes it look more like HTC’s Nexus One.

Other features include a 3.7-inch touchscreen, 8-megapixel camera, and an optical mouse in place of a trackball.

maker faire coming to nyc!

For the first time, Maker Faire is coming to NYC this September! This event, which attracts hundreds of thousands of people in other cities, is a new concept for NYC.

In their own words:

“Organized by the staff of Make magazine, makezine.com and craftzine.com, Maker Faire is a newfangled fair that brings together science, art, craft and engineering plus music in a fun, energized, and exciting public forum. The aim is to inspire people of all ages to roll up their sleeves and become makers. This family-friendly event showcases the amazing work of all kinds of makers – anyone who is embracing the DIY spirit and wants to share their accomplishments with an appreciative audience.”

This is who they are looking for:

“Makers: Individuals, groups, schools and organizations that would like to demonstrate what they make and/or how it works in an interactive environment. For Maker groups, schools & organizations, we ask that you have one point person to coordinate your group efforts. Makers do not pay a fee to exhibit at Maker Faire for non-commercial exhibits.”

hello, I love you won’t you tell me your name?

It’s funny that I pictured the simplicity of each post in here but the first one? There is nothing simple about that.

I’ve never been simple though. I don’t like introductions – the getting to know you piece. I mean hi my name is Joliz, I’m 25 and from New York is so dull and reminiscent of an AA meeting. Not that I’ve ever been to one – but I can certainly imagine. It’s partly why I hate dates so much. They make me anxious. I want to skip the pleasantries and get to the yelling at each other to quit picking your toenails at the sofa.

Things don’t happen that way, but that’s how it will happen here. Expect an eclectic mix of beauty, fashion, technology and culture. You’ll get to know me soon enough, but right now I’d rather you get your feet off my table.
